US Open Martial Arts Championship

Every year, the US Open Martial Arts Championship (USOMAC) attracts hundreds of elite competitors from around the world. They gather here in New York City to compete for medals and cash prizes, with diverse divisions including form competitions (open hand & weapons) in Kung Fu (Northern & Southern), Karate, Contemporary Wushu, Taijiquan, Internal Martial Arts, and Taekwondo, as well as combat competitions in Point Sparring, Continuous Sparring, Ultimate Sanda, Shuai Jiao (Chinese Wrestling), Push Hands, Chi Sao, Short Weapon Sparring, and Arnis Stick Fighting. Our judges are experienced in judging national and international level competitions, and possess extensive knowledge in their martial art discipline, thus ensuring the quality and professionalism of the USOMAC.

Organized by the World Fighting Martial Arts Federation (WFMAF), the US Open Martial Arts Championship is an arena which promotes the core values of martial arts: self-discipline, respect for others, and an overall attitude of kindness toward all people. This tournament provides a unique experience for martial artists from around the globe to come together and compete in a friendly atmosphere, to share skills and knowledge, to establish new friendships with those who share the same core values of martial arts, and to express these core values through actions. Taekkyon: The Original Martial Art of Korea

The rhythmic steps and constant motions of the hands distract the opponent, setting up for a kick or sweep. Unlike taekwondo, flying or spinning kicks aren’t often used, rather, low kicks to the shins or knees, sweeps and trips, and direct push kicks to the body are more common.

(SMA bloggers) – Almost everybody has heard of Taekwondo and Hapkido these days, but Taekkyon, the original indigenous martial art of Korea, is almost unheard of.  Almost wiped out during the Japanese colonisation of Korea, the art is now making a revival, and is listed both as a national treasure of Korea, and is the first martial art on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list.

Choose Your Weapon: Exotic Martial Arts

(The New York Times) – WHEN it comes to the popularity of judo, tae kwon do and other combat disciplines, the math says it all: Asian martial arts studios in the United States outnumber Dunkin’ Donuts outlets by more than three to one. Black Belt magazine counts some 20,000 studios nationwide and estimates that perhaps two million Americans practice Eastern fighting disciplines weekly or more, said the executive editor Robert Young. Whether for sport or self-defense, Asian martial arts are about as alien as, well, glazed doughnuts.
